Introduction to Digital Media

I found the videos on glitch art very informative. Nick did a good job defining glitch art as something unexpected rather than an error or a glitch because the artists capitalizes on the unexpected nature of the glitch to create something new. I also found it very interesting when he spoke on the aesthetic of glitch and how as technology evolves, so will our perception of what a glitch is. The artifacts changing over time but the ethic being the same is really cool to think about, as long as we continue to test the limits of what our current devices and programs can do we will continue to discover new forms of glitch art. It's strange to get into a mindset of consciously doing things the wrong way but a lot of amazing art is created as a result of that. The topic of politics in glitch was good too. Apple saying the ipad can "be whatever you want" but in actuality it prevents you from doing lots of stuff both both physically and digitally to the device was fun to learn about. I've never really considered how much the technology around us also limits us depending on the intent of the creator. Nicks video on the practice of continual breaking of the apps and other programs we use summed up the concept of glitch well, the only way to discover new and unique forms of glitch is to continue to try and push the tools we have past their intended purpose. The copyright video was my favorite I think. Nick says "without copying, in the creative sense, culture can't exist." which is true, every form of art we experience today was influenced by something else.

  1. Very well said, and comprehensive, Alex. "The technology around us also limits us"—what a strong point, which points toward a historical and future trajectory for this kind of attitude toward technology. As you say, this approach to technology—this healthy skepticism—will continue to empower us, as both consumers and producers, to be active in our engagement with it.
