Video Essay Response

I found the video assignments very interesting as we continue to learn the early stages of Photoshop and continue learning about how to glitch images. I enjoyed learning more about the different facets of data bending and the origins of the glitches. Something I find unique about glitch art is how it was basically founded through the fundamental workings of the technology we use, and instead of just being a literal glitch in the system, it can be used to create interesting and cool pieces of digital art. That was made clear in one of the videos we watched where the man in the video had brought up how the true act of a normal glitch is an error in programming while glitch art is when the glitch is purposely made in creating art.

What I found the most interesting of all we watched in the videos was just the discussion around the programs we use and how we need to consider the world views of the makers at all times. It is just something I have never really considered while using different programs until it was brought up in the video. When he mentioned how we subscribe to the politics of a programmer by using their format I thought it was something really smart that I had again never considered. With everything progressing in our world of technology I do wonder at what point, if it does come up, are some of these programs going to develop their own world view through the latest and greatest AI. It is all crazy fascinating to me and the guy who made these videos did a great job at bringing up real world factors outside of the tech itself. He even mentioned a quote that was something along the lines of our tech being a "Deeply misunderstood set of tools we increasingly depend on." That quote is a little jarring because it is so rooted in real life. I just hope I can continue to learn adobe to the best of my ability.

  1. Good quote to use here, Trent. In it lies an argument for digital literacy—as we become increasingly reliant on a multitude of digital systems for information, communication, and expression, it is imperative that we also challenge these systems' logic, worldview, or capital interests. Remaining critical, perhaps through a practices of glitch in one form or another, is a way to be actively engaged in these systems, rather than passively consuming them. This kind of empowerment also prepares us to find more and more potential and control in the applications that we use, whether as designers, critics, producers, or artists.
