Movie Poster

  1. Nice composition overall—it appears that the rule of thirds is definitely informing your placements. The sky needle and rainbow gradient design follow almost exactly along a line of thirds, and the sun and underside of the cloud form rest along one of the horizontal lines. This organization makes it easy on the eyes to flow around the poster and take in the important information. The strongest detail, to my eye, is the nebulousness of the rainbow shape—so crisp and pronounced, yet non-specific in a way that arrests my attention and consideration of what this film might be about. Details that detract from this arrest, conversely, are the bright red shapes at the bottom and behind the structure, which seem to try to represent something specific, and thereby integral to the poster's meaning. In that this meaning or representation is unclear, the shapes distract a bit from the otherwise unified image. Otherwise, the plane feels awkwardly and I'm trying to put my finger on why. I don't think it's the brightness and contrast, as the plane might actually stand out like this on a bright day, but I think it's the almost advertisement-like pronouncement of the plane's brand. The word "jazz" is so large and visually prioritized in the design that it pulls unnecessary attention. Simply choosing a different source image, or perhaps stamping out the text in PS, would have generalized the plane and drawn more attention to overall unity. Nice work overall, it looks like you've gained some strong PS skills.
