Ad Analysis
The ad I chose for this assignment is a Glossier advertisement. Glossier is a makeup brand that focuses on enhancing your features instead of creating new ones with makeup. Starting off this ad we see a girl bare faced with the glossier logo covering the screen. She is wearing muted tones and is behind a grey background. This was most likely done so when the makeup is on it pops. The next clip shows the girl on a very pigmented red background and she is applying eyebrow gel. This was done so that one it shows that the products are pigmented and too it is so easy to apply. I also do not know if this was on purpose but she is also taking a snapchat video while applying makeup which would also infer that it is so easy you can apply on the go. The next clip shows her applying makeup and the product that she is using. Once again I think this was to show how pigmented it was as well on how to apply the product. The product that she was applying just a second ago is called cloud paint so it fits that there are pictures of a pink sky which is another way to show that it is natural. The next clip is another snapchat esk video where this time she is behind a lava lampy liquid while applying the blush. I think they showed the blush so many times and with different colors to show how different the colors are. The next few shots are of nature and this is showing that it is natural and healthy for you. She is also talking over some of the products saying how easy it is to apply. I think the target demographic for this is probably girls or guys who use makeup and want the makeup to look like they aren’t wearing makeup. Age range I would say is probably 16-25.
As a rule, remember that NOTHING is accidental in an ad, rather every choice has a purpose. Snapchat is very intentionally referenced here, and all the more important to identify and analyze because it is referenced secondarily, as an aside to the actual product. This is either free advertising for Snapchat, or a premeditated and funded product integration maneuver. Nonetheless, its inclusion certainly indicates something about the target audience, that the use of the social media platform would be second nature, almost incidental, to the demographic being targeted. Perhaps they are specifically targeting an audience that looks up makeup tutorials and uses social media for DIY advice? Your analysis could get a bit deeper into the specific target audience, possibly by process of elimination: who is decidedly NOT the target? The reason I have not commented on the blog posts of others is that we had a constructive conversation about each analysis in class. I look forward to seeing your progress on this project, including a first draft of your video edit, in class on Tuesday.
