Squatty Potty Ad Analysis

I chose the ad “This Unicorn Changed the Way I Poop” . It's probably one of the funniest ads I have ever seen and thought it would make for a good ad analysis project. The ad opens with the image of an animatronic unicorn puppet squatting over a conveyor belt of ice cream cones as it poops swirls of rainbow colored ice cream into each one. The commercial is narrated by an attractive yet douchey prince dressed in a whimsical prince’s outfit right out of a Disney film.

The prince starts off by talking about how ice cream comes from the sphincters of magical unicorns then quickly changes the subject to the audience and their pooping habits. A toilet appears from below and replaces the cones that were once under the unicorn's butt. An illustration then imposes itself over the unicorn's rear end and demonstrates how sitting on a toilet makes it difficult to poop.

The prince continues his comedic narration and lists all the negative things pooping on a toilet can do to you like hemorrhoids and constipation. The toilet is removed and the unicorn and imposed image shows what pooping in a squatting position looks like, which is explained as being much easier and better for you.

Next the product this ad is for is introduced by the prince, The Squatty Potty. He tells the audience the squatty potty will give you the best poop of your life no matter who you are. The ad continues to show and explain the actual product itself with much humor mixed in. After this the prince points out all the places the squatty potty has been featured and tells us about the amazing reviews it has received on Amazon.

The ad then comes to a close with some more ridiculous jokes and situations including at the very end where a group of children are standing around eating the rainbow poop ice cream. The entirety of this ad takes place in a whimsical fantasy world full of vibrant colors and characters to match.

The target audience of this ad is definitely millennials. The reason for this has much more to do with the marketing strategy of this ad combined with how this ad is produced and not solely based on the ad alone. Some of the best ways to target millennials with ads include; making it instagram worthy, letting them see themselves in the add, making it optimized for social media, focusing on word of mouth, interacting with them easily and quickly, appeal to their interests, don’t sell a product-sell a purpose, make it post worthy, be different than all the other ads, appeal to FOMO, know that reviews matter, be relevant and engaging across all platforms there are other ways not listed here but for the ones I just mentioned this ad ticks all of those boxes.

I think something this ad does really really well is that it does actually appeal to many other demographics. Children are going to love this ad, teenagers will find it amusing, adults of all ages are going to laugh out loud at the over the top ridiculousness of this advertisement. This ad gets people talking and they will watch it and share it just because of how funny it is. This makes it possible for this ad to reach many more people than it was intentionally made for. A kid will see this and want to show it to their parents or grandparents, many people who see it will want to share it with others.

Making an ad for a medical product that makes it easier for people to poop is an awkward topic to sell to people and turning the topic of defecating into a magical fantastical world of rainbow ice cream that comes from the bottom of an adorable baby unicorn is a genius way to make this ad appealing. That mixed with the online marketing strategy of making the ad ideal for social media platforms and sharing, I think makes this one of the most effective ad campaigns I have ever seen.
